Brief Bio: Paul T. (Tom) Hackett served as a high school English, drama, and fine arts teacher at Central High School for six years. Later he served as an administrator in both the Phenix City and Alexander City, Alabama school systems working as an assistant principal, an elementary school principal, a middle school principal, a system-level chief of operations, and a superintendent. He is presently an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at Columbus State University where he chairs the Department of Counseling, Educational Leadership, and Professional Studies and serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Education. Hackett has published work in the Journal of Educational Research and Policy Studies and the Journal of the Louisiana Education Research Center. He has been a co-author of papers presented at 10 national conferences and has five articles published in the CSU College of Education journal, Perspectives in Learning. In 2008, Hackett was a CSU Faculty Research and Scholarship Award nominee and was presented with a CSU Outstanding Teacher of Writing Award. He was also been presented with a Dean's Award for Innovation in 2004, and named to the College of Education Hall of Fame in 2006. He is presently studying emotional intelligence as it relates to effective leadership practices in the schools. Collaborating with CSU Acting Director of Institutional Effectiveness Bill Hortman, Hackett is working to establish a model to tie leader behavior to student performance. Other areas of interest include neurological underpinnings of effective instructional practices and the application of basic counseling skills as they apply to effective school leadership. He has recently recorded a podcast, "Basic Counseling Skills for School Administrators, which can be found at www.counseloraudiosource.net, a worldwide academic resource.
